VICAM AWARDED SPONSORSHIP OF MYCOTOXICOLOGY NEWSLETTER
International newsletter serves as forum for the discussion of mycotoxins
WATERTOWN, MA (April 15, 1998) VICAM, a world leader in agricultural biotechnology and bioseparations, has been awarded sponsorship of the Mycotoxicology Newsletter (MTNL), an international forum for the discussion of mycotoxins. Upon being awarded sponsorship of the MTNL, VICAM chose to appoint Dr. Angelo Visconti, Director of the CNR Institute of Toxins and Mycotoxins from Plant Parasites (Istituto Superiore di Sanita), to the position of editor. VICAM is known internationally for its rapid mycotoxin and microbiological testing systems for the food and feed industries. VICAM also provides tests for mold in fruits and vegetables and tests for alpha-amylase in wheat and flour. VICAM has an additional line of separations technologies for their veterinary reproductive platform.
About the Mycotoxicology Newsletter
The Mycotoxicology Newsletter was
created in 1990 by the International Commission
on Mycotoxicology (I.C.M.T.), a joint commission
appointed by the International Society of Plant
Pathology-Mycotoxicology Committee and the International
Union of Microbiological Societies-Mycology Division.
Since 1990 the MTNL has been edited by Urban
Diener of the Department of Plant Pathology at
Auburn University and has served as a tool to improve
communication among scientists around the world
involved in mycotoxin research, education, and
regulation. For the last eight years the MTNL has
provided advance notice of international meetings
on mycotoxins, summarized meeting proceedings,
reported on research developments and mycotoxin
outbreaks, and supplied information on new publications
concerning mycotoxins.
VICAM and the Mycotoxicology Newsletter
After a history of providing
support to the MTNL, VICAM was awarded sponsorship
of the MTNL in 1998. Prior to VICAMs
involvement with the MTNL, the newsletter
depended on donations and sponsorship to cover
printing and distribution costs. When editor Urban
Diener sought to retire, the existence of the MTNL was
in jeopardy due to lack of stable funding. VICAM
was pleased to step in and support the MTNL through
financial contributions because of the publications
importance to mycotoxicology research.
VICAM was awarded sponsorship because of their pledge to continue the MTNL as an independent publication. VICAM believes the MTNL is an invaluable resource for members of the mycotoxicology field and should not be subject to commercialization. The publications independent status is critical toward its function as an internationally respected forum for mycotoxin research and education.
The Future of the MTNL
Dr. Angelo Visconti has been selected to assume
editorship of the Mycotoxicology Newsletter. Dr. Visconti is
a prominent, internationally known expert in the field of mycotoxin
research and the Director of the Institute of Toxins and Mycotoxins
in Bari, Italy. The appointment of Dr. Visconti as editor of the MTNL will
significantly raise the profile of the publication at the international
level.
VICAM will sponsor the MTNL by financing printing and distribution costs. VICAM has plans to aggressively increase distribution of the MTNL through several channels including magazine insertion; distribution at tradeshows; promoting the MTNL in VICAMs own publication, The Benchmark; and utilizing VICAMs extensive list of media contacts. The initial distribution of the MTNL in 1990 numbered 1,500; VICAM hopes to triple this distribution number by the year 2000. VICAM also plans to assist Dr. Visconti with the development of a website dedicated exclusively to the MTNL, www.mycotoxicology.org.
